About DividendDan
Hi, I’m a Tokyo-based former Bain & Company strategy consultant who has invested in Japanese equities for over a decade — beginning with value-oriented and shareholder-perk (株主優待) positions before shifting to a dividend-growth and yield strategy. I’ve personally built and managed a portfolio of Tokyo-listed equities — including the megabanks, Buffett-favored trading houses, semiconductor equipment names, and J-REITs — using the same primary-source Japanese filings and IR channels that most English-language analysts can’t access. On this blog, I translate that research into plain English for global investors.
My Background
- Strategy consulting (Bain & Company, Tokyo): Spent years doing deep financial and operational analysis of Japanese corporations across manufacturing, trading, and financial services sectors.
- 10+ years as a Japanese equity investor: Actively traded and held Japanese listed stocks, tracking IR disclosures, shareholder meeting materials (株主総会資料), and earnings commentary in Japanese.
- Resident in Japan: I attend earnings events, visit storefronts, and read the Japanese-language financial press daily — giving this blog a ground-level perspective unavailable from overseas desks.
My Mission: Bridging the Information Gap
I created BestJapanStocks.com to give English-speaking investors what Bloomberg terminals and US financial media can’t: a native Japanese investor’s perspective on Tokyo-listed dividend stocks, grounded in direct access to Japan’s IR events, retail channels, corporate culture, and Japanese-language financial media.
I don’t just look at P/E ratios and dividend yields. I apply a “boots on the ground” approach:
- Real World Checks: I visit stores, walk through the real estate properties, and use the products to see if a brand is actually popular in Japan.
- Primary Sources: All analysis starts from the original Japanese 有価証券報告書 (annual reports), 決算説明会資料 (earnings presentations), and TSE disclosure filings — not translated summaries.
- Shareholder Returns Focus: I specifically track companies changing their mindset toward shareholder returns (dividends and buybacks) — the defining trend in Japan’s equity market since 2023.
- US Investor Lens: Every article includes practical access information: Interactive Brokers ADR/direct access, withholding tax rates, and PFIC considerations where relevant.
